A warming winter update

June 25, 2026

These bright sunny but freezing days are, admittedly, my favourite days of winter. You get the dose of vitamin D but also the chance to wrap up warm.

Winter is usually about taking things a bit slower than usual, cosying up with a nice fluffy knit and a hot drink.

Inspiration for projects has been coming directly from you, our wonderful customers this week. Here's a few ideas we may steal ourselves:

Lovely Ribbed Scarf by Purl Soho. It's one of their excellent free patterns and calls for a snuggly yarn. Our recommendation is Zealana Rimu Fingering - slightly lighter than the yarn called for in the pattern, but being a scarf it'll still work.
Only Lovers Left by Sara Ottoson features in Laine issue 28. A henley-style pullover, we think it would be great as both an under and over garment. Again, Zealana Rimu Fingering would make this project next level.
Lots of you have been in looking for vest patterns. Riggies by Gudrun Johnston is high on the list of faves. Knit up in 8ply, it would be dreamy in either Woolstok or Loch Lomond.
Petite Knits' patterns continue to be endlessly popular, and the Olga Sweater is top of the shop list at the moment. A great option for playing with bold or muted stripes in 8ply.

Spinning Sunday is this weekend - join us for a social spin in the shop. If, like me, you need to carve out spinning time, this is a great way to commit. A couple of hours with good company and trouble-shooting help if you need it. And, of course, it's free to come along. BYO wheel or spindle.

With school holidays on the way, we've got new kids' classes lined up:

Kids crochet has been in massive demand, so there are two sessions in the school holidays. Drop your kid off for a couple of hours and give them a lifetime hobby to enjoy!

And many of you have asked for kids' knitting, so Tash will guide your kids through the basics so they stop bugging you to teach them. You're welcome...and all materials are included.
If your kids are more art inclined, Katie and Tash have a new venture just for you - and we're running koha kids' sessions in the school holidays. Check out Mish Mash Make to book.

And here's your reminder to book for our next Lights Up Knitting!

Our July event sees us watch the one and only 1996 Baz Luhrmann Romeo + Juliet!

6pm, Wednesday 15 July
